Tesla model S electric car is not only about the unique power system; the matter of it uses battery not fuel. More than that, people start to see it as the prestige for its glorious design and performance. Equipped by series of battery, the car is able to reach the range of around 334 kilometers. On the other hand, with the battery of 85 kWh, it is able to reach 426 km. To charge it, the electricity needed is 10,000 watt and it should be charged from 8 to 10 hours. It is great for sure although the cost to be spent is not small as well. Then, how is about the engine and the horsepower of this car in general? Here is the explanation.
The Horsepower and Powertrain
The performance model of Tesla model S offers three phases of AC induction of 416 horsepower or around 310 kW. Meanwhile, the AC induction also has 4 poles. It also features the 443 ft-lb rear mounted electric motor equipped by the copper rotor. The base model of this Tesla series applies a 362 horsepower or around 270 kW and motor for 325 ft lb or 440 N.m. As a result, it must also use the drag coefficient of Cd=0.24 which is generally lower than any other car. It was claimed by the company during the release in 2012. It was then confirmed later that the drag coefficient of Cd=0.24 in 2014.
Its engine utilizes the traditional open differential for the rear axle and an open differential for the front axles. Uniquely, both sides of axles don’t have any mechanical connection. As a solution, the distribution of power is controlled electronically using dual motors.
The engine system is able to produce top speed of 155 mph or around 250 km per hour. Then, it can accelerate the speed from 0 to 60 miles per hour only in about 2.8 seconds. The main factor of this impressive acceleration is due to the total motor power. On the other hand, there is also another factor comes from the wheel drive powertrain. Those accelerations can be set up through some modes; they are ‘Insane mode’ with 1 g of acceleration and the optional ‘Ludicrous mode’. The ‘Ludicrous mode’ is available with the upgraded 90 kWh battery.
Lately, on March 2017, one of the Tesla Model S variants, P100D broke the record of ‘Fastest Acceleration of any Production Vehicle’ in the ludicrous mode. Aside from the matters of engine system, it was claimed that the implementation of battery as the power source plays important role to increase the acceleration.
More than just an Electric Car
It is proven that Tesla model S is more than just an electric car to save the environment from pollution and others. It performs well with many of the excellences including in term of horsepower. The fact that the electric power plays important roles in forming this car into a fast vehicle is undeniably surprising. But with many explanations, it is basically something logical.
